The Ultimate Guide to Euro 2024: Everything You Need to Know Before the Tournament

1. Mascot

Like other world football tournaments, one of the highlights is the mascot, Germany as the host also adopted a unique mascot, namely Albärt. The teddy bear-shaped Albart is the official mascot of the 2024 UEFA European Championship in Germany.

What is unique is that in determining this mascot, Germany included school children throughout Europe through the UEFA Football In Schools program. There were several names proposed such as Bärnardo, Bärnheart and Herzi von Bär but the one chosen was Albärt who won with 32% of the vote.

The inspiration for this mascot is a little bear the perfect friend for any football fan. The hope is that by launching this tournament mascot, it can create a fun character and inspire children to enjoy playing football.

2. Participating Countries

21 countries have qualified for Euro 2024, including Germany, which has qualified directly because it is the host. All countries previously competed in a series of tournaments, namely the 2024 UEFA European Qualifiers which were held from 23 March 2023 to 26 March 2024.

Even though the groups have been determined, there are still 3 slots to be fought for by the countries playing in the play-off round A, B and C. The following is a list of 21 countries that have qualified and are still playing in the playoff round:

  • France (Group B winners)

  • Netherlands (Group B runner-up)

  • England (Group C winners)

  • Italia (runner-up Grup C)

  • Türkiye (Group D champion)

  • Rep. Czech (Group E runner-up)

  • Belgium (Group F champion)

  • Austria (runner-up Grup F)

  • Hungary (Group G champion)

  • Serbia (runner-up Grup G)

  • Denmark (Group H champion)

  • Slovenia (runner-up Grup H)

  • Romania (Group I winner)

  • Swiss (runner-up Grup I)

  • Portugal (Group J winners)

  • Slovakia (runner-up Group J)

3. Stadium

Germany facilitates 10 stadiums in 10 cities. All stadiums have high standards and large capacities. 10 cities including Berlin, Munich, Dortmund, Stuttgart, Gelsenkirchen, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Köln, Leipzig.

One of the best stadiums it has is the Berlin Olympic Stadium, a stadium located in the center of Berlin. The stadium was designed by German architect Werner March and built between 1934 and 1936 for the 1936 Berlin Olympics. It replaced the German Stadium designed by Werner’s father, Otto March. The stadium underwent renovations until mid-2004 to prepare it for the 2006 World Cup. Its capacity now reaches 74,228 spectators.

The Berlin Olympic Stadium is the current home stadium for Hertha BSC Berlin (soccer) and Berlin Thunder (American football).

4. Previous Euro Cup

The Euro 2020 Cup is a historic moment where MNC Vision is also the official broadcaster of the cup. Previously, in the 16th edition, the 16th tournament was very unique in that there was not just one host but there were 11 host countries and it was held in 11 cities located in that country.

And the mascot is also a unique one, namely Skillyz, a freestyler with a street football style. Skillzy’s shape and size are the same as humans with faces similar to anime characters. The official UEFA EURO mascot is complete with light blue clothes with the EURO 2020 logo.

The previous tournament was won by Italy against England with a penalty shootout score of 3 – 2. Italy qualified as champions and won the prestigious EURO 2020 trophy.
