The story of Alfonso de Portago, marquis, racing legend and admired by Fernando Alonso, covered in the film “Ferrari”

In the summer of 1957, bankruptcy hovered over Ferrari, the legendary brand that Enzo Ferrari and his wife Laura built in Modena, a symbol of Italy and a cult brand for motor fans. “Il Commendatore” staked his future in the Mille Miglia, the legendary race that crossed Italy starting and finishing in Brescia. The last edition was in that fateful 1957. The young and handsome Alfonso Cabeza de Vaca, Marquis of Portago, lost his life at the age of 28 in a spectacular accident that claimed ten spectators.

Portago entered the legend and his figure continued to inspire current champions, among whom the Asturian Fernando Alonso stands out, who has acknowledged his admiration for the driver. Portago’s “Fon” now returns to the present with “Ferrari”, the film directed by Michael Mann, with Adam Driver (Enzo Ferrari), Penélope Cruz (Laura Ferrari) and Gabriel Leone in the role of the aristocrat, with Asturian ancestry for his ancestor Francisca de Borja Fernández de Córdoba and Bernaldo de Quirós.

The Marquis, based in Biarritz, born in London in 1928 and sponsored by Alfonso impressive and was the first Spaniard to get on a Formula 1 podium. He practiced tennis, golf, skiing, fencing and horse riding. He stood out as a jockey and participated in two editions of the Aintree Grand National (Great Britain). At the Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympic Games in 1956, he competed in bobsleigh, a specialty then unknown in Spain. Enzo Ferrari defined him as a man with a disheveled appearance, hair that was too long and a two-day beard. Still, he drove women crazy. His last love was Linda Christian, mother of Romina Power and who left Tyrone Power for him.
