”The shopping basket could go from 150 to 500 euros if measures are not taken”

Manuel Pimentel, former minister of labor, has gone live on ‘Everything is a lie’ to talk about the consequences of the farmers’ protests.

The former minister affirms that production will be limited and prices will rise if the necessary measures are not taken.

‘Everything is a lie’ has interviewed live Manuel Pimentel, former minister of labor, after he stated that if necessary measures are not taken regarding the farmers’ protests, one of the consequences could be that the shopping basket increases from 150 to 500 euros.

The former minister has explained why farmers ”have jumped”: ”They jump basically for two reasons, hopelessness and boredom. Hopelessness because the numbers don’t work out, they are losing profitability, the young people in the family don’t follow them and also fed up with the new values of society, due to certain circumstances they have been designated as enemies of the environment for some time (…)”.

”In Europe, today due to this set of difficulties, less and less food is produced and how people have to eat, it is a question of supply and demand. Prices are beginning to rise, but basically because production has been limited and has become more expensive,” Pimentel continues to explain.

Furthermore, it has been announced that prices will rise: ”If we continue with this line of legislation, production, in the end production is going to be greatly limited and prices are going to rise. Let’s hope that there is sanity and that together we can approve a food strategy that allows a varied, healthy and sustainable diet at a reasonable price and with a fair income for farmers.”

”All this discomfort that I am talking about translates into a severe increase in the shopping basket that will continue because in the short term each and every one of the regulations continues to make more expensive, limiting and restricting agricultural production,” says the former minister.
