The Port of Algeciras increases the movement of goods by 3.3% in January |

The Port Authority of Algeciras (Spain) has concluded the first month of the current year with a total movement of nine million tons of merchandise, reflecting an increase of 3.3% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The aforementioned increase has been driven mainly by liquid bulk, which has reached a figure of 2.8 million tons in the Cepsa, Evos and Exolum terminals, representing an increase of 17.2%.

For its part, solid bulk has experienced an increase of 35.5%, adding up to a total of 42,903 tons. Regarding container traffic, it has remained stable at levels similar to the previous year, with a movement of 372,023 TEUs, which represents a slight decrease of 1.5%.

Unlike container traffic, the activity of the Strait during the month of January has shown a positive balance on the Algeciras-Ceuta, Algeciras-Tánger Med and Tarifa-Tánger Ciudad lines, with an increase of 14.4% in the shipment of passengers and 21.4% in the number of vehicles on a passenger basis.

Highlighting ro-ro traffic, a growth of 8.6% has been recorded, with a total of 43,453 trucks, with the Algeciras-Tangier Med line being the preferred by the majority, with 40,779 units.

Regarding the supply of fuel to ships, a general increase of 20% has been observed, and a 37% increase in operations at anchor, due to new routes chosen by shipping companies to avoid the Red Sea. Of more than 600 ships that refueled in January in the Port of Algeciras, about half chose to do so at anchor.

Finally, the Port Authority is evaluating the resolution of the General Directorate of Quality and Environmental Assessment, relating to the strategic environmental declaration of the “Infrastructure Master Plan of the Port of Algeciras Bay”, the processing of which began in 2015. It will consult the next steps continue with State Ports, as a substantive body.
