The New York Yankees Offseason: Waiting on Blake Snell

The New York Yankees have had a busy offseason, with interesting additions, such as Alex Verdugo, Marcus Stroman and Juan Soto. However, a big deal is still missing, as many expect Blake Snell to sign with the Bronx team.

Snell is coming off winning the second Cy Young of his career, thanks to an extraordinary campaign with the San Diego Padres. He wants more than $200 million in the offer for him, but the Yankees have not been willing to oblige the left-handed pitcher financially.

If all this happens, Clarke Schmidt would be the big sacrifice, as he would lose his place in the rotation. Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortés and Stroman already have secured places as starters.

“It’s just part of the business, but I’m going to keep doing my thing every day and whatever happens, happens. I’m sure he’ll sign somewhere soon,” Schmidt said, according to MLB.com reporter Mark Feinsand. .

Schmidt worked as a starter last year in the face of so many injuries suffered by Yankees starters such as Rodón, Cortés Jr., among others. The right-hander pitched 159 innings in 2023 and had never pitched more than 57 in his major league career.

Schmidt is expected to continue preparing as a starter to fill the fifth spot in the rotation, pending what happens with Snell.
