The Multi-Sport Giant: Sporting Lisbon Beyond Football

Contents

Sporting Lisbon, YB’s opponent in the Europa League, is a big player in Portugal and not just in football.

The Young Boys’ opponent in the Europa League round of 16 is usually referred to as Sporting Lisbon in this country. Which is not entirely correct. Because the club is actually called Sporting Clube de Portugal or Sporting CP for short.

Sporting is a club that is based in Lisbon, but thinks bigger and is bigger too. Hence the addition “de Portugal” and not “de Lisboa”. The word football (or futebol) is completely missing from the club name. With good reason: Similar to the Grasshopper Club Zurich in Switzerland, there are sporting departments in numerous other sports such as handball, basketball, roller hockey or judo, athletics and fencing.

The sporting teams are usually among the crème de la crème in Portugal in their sports. Both handball players and footballers have won the Portuguese championship 19 times.

Over 100,000 members

Sporting’s appeal in Portugal is great. The club has over 100,000 members. This means Sporting is still only number 2 in the country. The big long-term rival Benfica Lisbon has well over 250,000 members.

Compared to its EL opponent YB, Sporting is of course a giant. The Young Boys “only” have around 20,000 members, which makes them the clear number 1 among Swiss football clubs.

You can find out which transfer Sporting recently made big money with and which player is likely to soon bring millions more into the club’s coffers in the radio report above.
