The Most Successful Athletes of 2023: Remscheid’s Athletes of the Year

Ten candidates and five teams in three categories – the most successful athletes of 2023 have been sought in Remscheid since the beginning of February. After the traditional opening event of the Remscheider Sports Association in the Allee-Center, the voting boxes were set up in the Remscheid and Lüttringhausen town halls as well as in the Allee-Center and the online voting portal was activated on the Internet.

With the RTV judo team, Alexander Gabler finished third in the Bundesliga North last year. The 25-year-old celebrated his greatest individual triumphs by winning the German championship in the weight class up to 73 kilograms and winning bronze in the national team at the World and European Championships. Gabler is currently fighting to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris.

The Remscheider TV archer has been one of the national leaders in his age group for many years. In 2023 he set a European record (541 rings) at the indoor championships in Leverkusen with the barebow over the 25 meter distance. His most important successes last year include fifth place at the German Championships (blank bow / Masters) as well as first and second place with the team with the recurve bow (indoor / outdoor).

Alice Schöpp looks back on a particularly successful year. With the Marienburger SC she became German team champion for women 50. She won the singles at the International German Championships for women 55. The tennis player from SC Rot-Weiß Remscheid achieved further top placings in this age group with second place in singles and victory in doubles the national championships and second places at the World Championships in Lisbon with the team and in doubles alongside AnkeWurst.

Ute Seifert has been active for Remscheider SV for more than 30 years. At the senior women’s basketball world championship in Buenos Aires, the 66-year-old and the German team could not be defeated: the team went undefeated and won the title in the 65 age group.

Like Alexander Gabler, Lütfiye Tutal can also hope to take part in the Olympic Games in Paris: The athlete from the Bergisches Boxing Club distinguished herself by winning the title at the German U22 Championships, among other things.

Who will ultimately be chosen as the winner of the public vote in the three categories at the “Matinée des Sports” will be decided by April 12th. Until this day you can vote using a voting coupon or online – on Sunday, April 21st, the secret will be revealed on stage from 11 a.m.

In the Teo Otto Theater, visitors can expect not only the traditional honors on this day, but also a supporting program. The tickets cost 15 euros (adults) or 12 euros (under 18 years) and include a finger food buffet and non-alcoholic drinks. If you want to be there on April 21st at the Teo Otto Theater, you should reserve your tickets at the Remscheid town hall (room 28; ☏ 02191 / 16-3765), at the sports office in the Lüttringhausen town hall, Kreuzbergstraße 15 (☏ 02191 / 16-2216) or in the Sportbund-Eck in the Allee-Center (Wednesdays and Fridays and on Saturday, March 2nd, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
