“I had a complex with my hands because they are chubby, strong, my body is suddenly rough, I didn’t love it, I didn’t like it and I myself felt that self-sabotage when I didn’t really see what Judo had given me, which is: my personality, my character is super indomitable and I feel that all combat sports create gladiators,” he added.

Martínez emphasized that although people today continue to think that some sports are only for men, speaking specifically of combat disciplines, it is women who predominate.

“These disciplines always give security, so if you are a person with low self-esteem, the fact that you know a martial art and know how to defend yourself is always very good, also the way in which you perform in Judo takes you to the spiritual and knowing you, in the same way opens doors to you all over the world,” he expressed.

A few steps to the Paris 2024 ticket

The Mexican representative explained that although she feels nervous and afraid about the classifications, which in this cycle were cut from 24 to the first 18 places, she is ready to face the next tournaments and be able to collect the necessary points to take her country to the Olympic joust.

“I am transforming all of this into positive energy because in the end the only thing you cannot do is not try, so I am willing to die trying and spend all the resources and tools that are in me to be able to get there,” she said.

Currently, Paulina is 8 places away from the direct classification and only 60 points from the continental quota, which is disputed with her own compatriots and those from the American continent.

“The classification closes in the World Cup that will be in mid-May and from there the cut is made, if you have collected the points to qualify you enter and if the continental quota tabulators do not begin, then in the middle of that month it ends with this delirium,” he stressed.

Although he still has 10 competitions to go before the Olympics begin, he said that it fills him with a lot of love to know that he is representing not only his country, but his culture, roots and beliefs internationally:

“Having the possibility of being able to stand on a tatami gives me a lot of adrenaline and nerves, but I have three key words before competing and being able to focus, one of them is Mexico, you don’t know how beautiful our flag is, listening to the anthem national and to say that it has been all worth it, for me it is an honor and pride,” he reflected.

Sport transforms lives

Being one of the youngest representatives of the Mexican teams that have gone out to compete in other countries to reach Paris 2024, Paulina affirmed that sport is the strong key to being able to transcend in life, both physically, mentally and spiritually.

“If you are a girl or boy, let no one tell you that you can’t do something, if a person tells you that you can’t, it’s because they tried and couldn’t, but you’re not the same, if it’s your dream, make it happen,” he mentioned.

The athlete considered that no matter what sport people practice, whatever it may be, in the end it will transform their lives, minds and hearts, building them into persevering and resilient people.

“Seek to be better human beings, sport is a very beautiful tool to transform us, but if you don’t practice it, look for something that you are passionate about or that you do with love and that you say: this is what makes me happy and if you do what you like You will do it in the best way even if you are vibrating softly,” he concluded.
