The ‘Telefónica Open Gateway’ demo takes as an example the tournament in Malaga that Real Madrid won

The recent Copa del Rey basketball tournament, played at the José María Martín Carpena Sports Palace (Málaga) and won by Real Madrid after beating FC Barcelona in the final (96-85), has taken center stage as an immersive experience during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) that is being held these days in Barcelona.
According to a statement from Telefónica, its ‘Telefónica Open Gateway’ demo has shown “a totally innovative way of experiencing sport” thanks to the possibilities of its APIs (application programming interfaces). This initiative is led by GSMA, a global organization of telephone operators, and “is opening a new era in telecommunications networks,” the note added.
In its MWC stall, according to the same press release, Telefónica has taken the Copa del Rey in Malaga 2024 as an example of use to “transmit a unique experience, designed in an immersive way to enjoy from home, or from the pavilion with a personalized broadcast, tailored to each user”.
Last Monday, King Felipe VI learned about the ‘Telefónica Open Gateway’ demo during his institutional visit to the MWC, with the participation of José Luis Escrivá, Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Service; Jordi Hereu, Minister of Industry and Tourism; Pau Relat, president of the Fira; Núría Marín, mayor of Hospitalet; José María Álvarez-Pallete, president of Telefónica and GSMA; Ángel Vilá, CEO of Telefónica; and John Hoffman, CEO of GSMA.
Former basketball player Pau Gasol, Telefónica ambassador, tested this Tuesday the demo about the tournament that was seen on Movistar Plus+ from February 15 to 18. With virtual reality (VR) glasses, each visitor to the stall will be placed at a point on the court of their choice and from there they will enjoy an immersive 180º or 360º perspective. “You will be able to view the names of the players, the statistics of the game or personal fouls without having to look away from the field of play by interacting with your hands,” the press release stated.
“In addition, the user can re-watch a special play of the match, with a 360º view of the action, invite family and friends who are remote to join virtually. All in real time and with a fluid experience and connectivity excellent and without interruptions thanks to the ‘Open Gateway’ API for quality of service within the home WiFi network – called Quality of Demand (QoD WiFi) – which allows you to configure and optimize the quality of service of the devices connected to a same WiFi network in demanding scenarios with high connectivity demand,” the note concluded.
