The Competitive World of Snowball Fighting: Hokkaido’s Dikku-san’s Kamide and the International Snowball Fight Championship

There’s a snowball fight that adults have for real. This is the competitive snowball fight that originated in Sobetsu Town, Hokkaido. The game is 7 players against 7 players, and the simple rule is that the player who hits as many snowballs as possible while making good use of a total of 5 shelters (defensive walls) wins.

And now, in Chitose City, Hokkaido, there is the strongest snowball fighting group in history. That is “Dikkusan’s Kamide”. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Showa-Shinzan International Snowball Fight, the pinnacle stage event held in Sobetsu Town. Last year, Dikusanzu Kamide achieved a record fifth victory at Showa Shinzan.

They are also members of the softball baseball team “Kande Sekkei Ecoa House”. The team is one of the strongest in Hokkaido and includes former professional baseball players and a former Koshien runner-up who is a classmate of Masahiro Tanaka (Rakuten). These baseball players talk about why they became addicted to snowball fights.

Former high school baseball player: “I didn’t expect snowball fights to be this difficult…”

“There aren’t many sports where you can aim to be the best in the world as an adult. But I thought it would be possible to aim for snowball fights.”

So says Kazunobu Tamura, the representative of Dicksans Kamide. He also served as the manager of the Japanese national team in the national competition held to commemorate the 30th Showa-Shinzan International Snowball Fight.

Seven-a-side snowball fights were made into international rules in 1988, and the first tournament was held in Sobetsu Town. It was part of the town’s revitalization efforts. From there, it spread to Finland, Canada, and China.

Dicksans Kamide was formed in 2003, 15 years after the birth of Yukigassen. The members were carpenters from “Kande Sekkei Ecoa House”, which undertakes housing design and construction. In Hokkaido, carpenter is pronounced “Deiku-san.” So, originally it was called “Deikku-san’s Kamide,” but someone misunderstood “i” as “i” and the name became established as “Dikku-san’s Kamide.” It is said that

At the time of their formation, they were also members of the company’s baseball team, which had participated in national tournaments. All of the players are known for their skill from playing hardball baseball in high school. Tamura also leads Otaru Kogyo as an ace and has advanced to the finals of the regional tournament.

“I thought I could win a snowball fight right away, within a year or two. However, you can’t win just by throwing a fast ball.I never thought that a snowball fight would be so tactical and difficult. It’s really frustrating when you get hit by a snowball. That’s how I got hooked.”
