The Balanced Belt: Study and Sport Project Combining Judo and Academic Success

The study and sport project “The Balanced Belt” was born from the idea of Andretta Bertone, teacher of mathematics and physics at the Scientific High School of Vercelli and federal fourth dan judo technical teacher, with a qualification to teach judo and a sports educator. The project began in December last year: every Monday at the San Salvatore oratory in Vercelli some high school students, who accepted the proposal conveyed through the school, meet to study and play sports together. Alongside Professor Bertone there are Professors Cristiana Cau and Carolina Vergerio, lower secondary school teachers, experts in cooperative learning and evaluation without numbers.

Study method

The first objective of the project is to support students in building their own study method and making it more effective, and in overcoming scholastic insecurities, through sport, an important element in the personal growth of adolescents. The second objective aims at a greater diffusion of sport among high school children. The choice of judo derives from the fact that it is a complete and formative sport of the person, which is based on principles such as respect, trust, courage, self-esteem, friendship and fairness.
Professor Bertone explains: «Often in this age group, boys and girls abandon sport for the most disparate reasons: study, economic, anxiety or stress, due to too much competitiveness, or injuries. The project aims to reach kids who have given up on pursuing the opportunities that sport can give them, among which we put socialization, improving confidence and self-esteem in the foreground. From here arises an awareness that allows you to build your own study method and trains your ability to deal with scholastic and extra-scholastic difficulties.».
The activities, which are free, include two hours of structured study followed by teachers and an hour and a half of judo, taught by Andretta Bertone, which includes athletic and technical training.
Prof. Bertone further states: «The project was born from the desire to offer children a path free of charge that combines my skills in the world of school and sport and that gives them support and added value in their growth path.».
The project is in collaboration with Kodokan Rho, the sports association with which Andretta Bertone has collaborated for years. Looking ahead, therefore, there are external training sessions and small trips to experience the emotions of sport. The greatest hope, however, is that the group grows and other boys and girls join to live this formative experience of growth.
On Monday 19 February, Maestro Mario Martuzzi, 6th dan and an important figure in Vercelli judo as well as teacher of Andretta Bertone, held a nice judo lesson to the kids who are participating in the project, bringing them his experience and his teachings and demonstrating esteem for the path they are taking.
