The Archery Success of the Argüelles-Presa Family: Sharp Arrows in Sports

The arrows of February 14, like today, are those of Valentine’s Day. The metaphorical ones that Cupid triggers to unite people of different types and conditions with love. In Ponteareas these arrived a few years ago and, currently, The Argüelles-Presa family has very sharp arrows, especially in the purely sporting field. They form a trio of archers that competed last weekend in the Spanish Championship and in which the youngest of the family, son Xes Argüelles, stands out.

“My parents were looking for a precision sport to do as a family. “They saw several things like pistol shooting, but they ended up opting for archery.”explains the youngest of the trio, who turned 17 on Monday. This is corroborated by the family’s promoter, Luis: “I always moved in the field of martial arts and I wanted a sport to get out of the work routine. We started with this as a hobby, but after two months we got the competitive streak and we signed up for the first competitions.”

This came about eight years ago and, little by little, they sharpened their arrows and adjusted the aiming point of their bows to advance day by day to the point of going last week to the Spanish Championship, in which Xes Argüelles obtained two medals and one of them with his father, Luis. It came in the senior team competition. “Xes closed the first round with the best score and, from there, the three best are taken to represent Galicia and, with mine and Teo Iglesias’ score, we finished in second absolute position,” explains the father.

The young man scored 587 points to be the best in the qualifying round after obtaining the silver in her age category, the cadet, at the beginning of the week. A performance that had a particular moment of intensity in the cross-match rounds because Xes and Luis met in the round of 16 with victory for the oldest. “Normally it is Xes who wins, but this time I was able to do it. It is not usual,” admits the father. And, for his part, the young man indicates that “he could have been a little tired from all the competition of the week, but the truth is that he shot very well, made a good score and surpassed me,” he says. And, he also confirms that “it is more common for me to overcome it.”

He was also at the meeting Verónica Presa, the mother of the family, who touched the podium in the mixed team category with Luis. They finished fifth place, one step away from the medals.

The youngest of the family won two silver medals at the event held in Jaén.

In the Spanish team

Besides, Xes Argüelles already has a notable record and is currently a member of the Spanish team. “They set some tests and requirements that you must meet to enter. They are hard, but I was able to overcome them, I am in the group and in the technical training program,” he explains. Of course, for the moment, he continues to live in the family residence in Ponteareas and “I go to some camps and championships.” The calendar rules.

With the colors of Spain he already competed in the European Championship (2022) and the World Cup (2023) in the cadet category and last year, in this case on his own, he attended the World Cup in Nimes, in which he finished third under-21 . Results that lead to a promising future for an archer since he has a notable present and enjoys it as a family. What was united by Cupid’s virtual arrows many years ago is now well combined with very real arrows, those of the recurve bow, which the Argüelles-Presa family is passionate about.
