PARIS – In the heart of summer, it will host badminton, gymnastics, para-badminton then para-weightlifting. The Adidas Arena built at Porte de la Chapelle in Paris for the Olympic Games is inaugurated this Sunday, February 11, 166 days before the opening ceremony. It is its future resident club, Paris Basketball, which is taking the cake by welcoming Saint-Quentin for the 23rd day of the French championship.

Several international events (urban sports, badminton, etc.) will follow on urban sports, before the Olympic and Paralympic high mass from July 26 to August 11 then from August 28 to September 8.

From September 15, Paris Basketball, which aims to put the capital back at the top of French and European basketball, will play all its home matches there in front of 8,000 spectators. Concerts and shows that can accommodate 9,000 people will also be organized there.

The Arena to which Adidas attached its name for 2 million euros per is “the intermediate capacity room” which was missing in Paris according to Emmanuel Grégoire, first deputy at the town hall. Because apart from the Accor Arena in Bercy and its 17,000 seats, Paris has no other large sports hall. Neither the Pierre-de-Coubertin stadium nor the Halle Georges-Carpentier exceeds 4,500 seats.

The Olympic Games were therefore an opportunity to bring this equipment out of the ground, the only equipment built within Paris for the event. For 138 million euros (a third of which was paid for by the Games), the hall, whose interior has a resemblance to Bercy, found its place in the north of the capital in a working-class district that is undergoing rapid change.

“The 18th century town hall wants this to remain a working-class neighborhood, no question of gentrification” underlines Emmanuel Grégoire. In fact, part of the 26,000 m2 of the enclosure, whose partly green forecourt is open to the street, is made up of a space (opening in early 2025) designed as a place for daily life (shows, exhibitions, etc.). . which opens onto a large terrace.

And two gymnasiums intended for associations, schools and clubs in this deprived district: hyper urbanized, place of tangle of the ring road, the A1 motorway and soon the CDG-Express railway viaduct, it housed a few years ago the « colline du crack ».
