Tennis Star Carlos Alcaraz Suffers Setback with Ankle Injury

Setback for tennis star Carlos Alcaraz: The Spaniard injured his ankle on Tuesday at the start of his first round game against local hero Thiago Monteiro at the ATP500 tournament in Rio de Janeiro. The world number two had to be treated and shortly afterwards continued playing with bandages. After a few rallies, Alcaraz gave up when the score was 1:1 in the first set. However, in the evening, after an examination, he announced that he was not seriously injured.

He will only have to take a few days off due to an ankle sprain, Alcaraz wrote on Instagram. He announced his start at the Masters 1000 tournament from March 6th to 17th in Indian Wells, California, where he is the defending champion.

The 20-year-old previously twisted his ankle and fell at the clay court tournament in Rio. The 2022 Rio winner then spoke of pain. “I felt bad,” said Alcaraz. “I could no longer move well and knew it would be impossible to continue. I thought it would get worse if I continued playing, so I decided to give up.”

The two-time Grand Slam winner has not won a tournament since his Wimbledon triumph last year. In Indian Wells at the beginning of March, Alcaraz has 1,000 points to defend as the reigning champion. If he is out for longer, there is a risk of a drop in the world rankings.
