Teddy Riner Speaks Out on the Treatment of French Athletes: “France Does not Deserve its Champions”

Teddy Riner is one of the most successful French athletes in his discipline, collecting medals for almost twenty years. A true ambassador of judo, and more generally of sport, the 34-year-old athlete is preparing for the Paris Olympic Games, which are to be held next summer in the capital. An important deadline, too underestimated according to the judoka.

“Yes, France is not a sports country,” said Teddy Riner, reacting to an extract from swimmer Florent Manaudou, who said the same thing during his appearance on the show last November. “Go to Brazil! There morning, noon, evening, they play sports, it’s vital. We are starting to understand.”

The athlete notes in fact that sport is not sufficiently integrated into French culture: “We can’t even put athletes and champions on a beautiful base…”, he added. Also invited on the set this Saturday, February 24, Michèle Laroque also protested the treatment of athletes in France.

“They do so much good for an entire country!”, she notably underlined. “France does not deserve its championsbecause we don’t give them the place they should have.” If Teddy Riner is aware that he is “the tree that hides the forest” on this point, he wanted to point out that the end of the month is difficult for many athletes, even at the highest level : “Certain European, world or Olympic champions cannot make up the month, yet they deserve it!”
