Switzerland’s Leandro Riedi triumphs at Davis Cup Qualifying in Groningen

Switzerland and the Netherlands are back to back after the first day of Davis Cup qualifying in Groningen. Leandro Riedi (ATP 175) indeed won 6-4 7-6 (7-3) his meeting against Botic van de Zandschulp (ATP 63) and thus erased the defeat of his compatriot Marc-Andrea Hüsler earlier in the day.

The Zurich resident has won his 13th match already in 2024. Victorious in two Challengers in January, the no. 1 of the Swiss team resoundingly confirmed the full extent of his progress.

Facing van De Zandschulp, Leandro Riedi had the merit of picking up the score in the second set after being down 4-2. In the deciding game, two consecutive double faults from his opponent opened a royal path for him into which he was able to rush.

Everything remains possible for Switzerland in this meeting, even if the Netherlands are still the big favorites. But with this devil in Leandro Riedi, captain Severin Lüthi benefits from a master asset who can still have some nice surprises in store for him on Saturday.
