Köhler sensationally wins gold at the World Swimming Championships
The German swimmer Angelina Köhler is sensationally crowned world champion in Doha. It is the first German triumph in the 100 meter butterfly since Britta Steffen’s victory in 2009.
One day after her World Cup triumph in the 100 meter butterfly, Angelina Köhler spoke openly about bullying in her youth. She wanted to encourage them: “I want to show the young girls and boys that you don’t have to be arrogant to achieve.”
No matter how great the joy was the day after her triumph, her World Championship victory in the 100 meter butterfly. When it came to classifying the victory, reflecting or even looking back, Angelina Köhler gave a deep insight into her inner life in a media round in Doha on Tuesday.
The swimming world champion spoke openly about bullying in her youth – and reported on corresponding problems. “I’m just a little bit different than everyone else. I had a bit of trouble with it as a teenager. “I also had a lot of problems with being bullied,” said the 23-year-old from Berlin.

“If you’re quite tall, quite thin, have long arms and slightly larger teeth, and wear glasses and fall over your feet, it’s quite easy for older boys to make fun of you. But above all, it strengthened me in the things I do,” said Köhler.

She wanted to impress with her performance and managed to do that. “I just want to show that someone who is scatterbrained can become world champion, then anyone can. I am anything but perfect. I want to show young girls and boys that you don’t have to be arrogant, you don’t have to be aloof to achieve. “I’m still Angie,” emphasized Köhler.

Köhler received praise for her performance from Britta Steffen, the two-time Olympic champion. “Yesterday I was glued to the screen with my six-year-old son, who was watching an international swimming race with me for the first time. And when Angelina became world champion in the 100 meter butterfly, we were really happy. A really big achievement,” Steffen told ARD radio on Tuesday. With her two World Cup victories in 2009, the now 40-year-old was the last German swimming world champion until the Köhler triumph in Doha.

You did a great job,” said Steffen and looked ahead: “Hopefully the next few months will be characterized by health and good training. And then you can look forward to Paris.” The Berlin native is now considered an expert in mental strength and sustainability and gives lectures on mental areas of life in organizations and companies.
