In different traditional businesses and markets in Mexico City, the great American football festival produces an increase in the sales prices of beer, meat, electric grills, coolers and accessories certified by the NFL.

According to data from the National Alliance of Small Merchants, the average ticket in the last edition of the Super Bowl was 1,089 pesos, a figure that helps the owners adjust each year the offer of products they provide to their customers.

For this weekend, the sale of ribs and flank steak increases by easily 30 or 40 percent, says Luis Gerardo Abad, who runs and manages a butcher shop in the Iztacalco mayor’s office. Many come early to ask us for between 10 and 15 kilos of meat, they already bring charcoal, nopales, onions and their boxes of beer. In these places, where every day there are expressions about dealers and güeritas, it is not necessary for large billboards to announce Sunday’s game. Most people know that there are meetings of five or more people at the door.

It is rare that someone comes and doesn’t know what to drink, those days generally the cheapest beer is sold a lot, which is usually on sale or includes a snack, says Rafael González, manager of a grocery store in the Alfonso Ortiz Tirado neighborhood. But whether the prices go up or down, most people ask about the loggerheads, that’s why we try to place them in the center of the store.

With much more sophisticated campaigns on television, radio and digital platforms, commercial stores attract a large number of people with the sale of garden grills, coolers and official NFL products.

As the time for the game gets closer, we are running out of sizes and models of jerseys or caps, explains the manager of a sports clothing store, where fans of all ages stop to admire helmets, balls, stuffed animals, images. of old Super Bowls, jerseys and collectible figures of the league, among which players such as Patrick Mahomes, Brock Purdy, Travis Kelce and Nick Bosa, members of the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers, appear.

Do not play with the balls in here, please notice a small clipping stuck to one of the stands, due to the presence of children who follow their parents’ tradition as NFL fans. Prices on average range from 60 pesos (equipment decals) to more than 3 thousand, in the case of products with limited existence on the market.

Our peak season begins and ends here, a couple of workers agree at the exit of a shopping center. No one rules out that the day after the game in Las Vegas sales will maintain themselves, although with discounts of 20 or 30 percent, because then the peak of the great wave will have passed.
