STY Discusses the Korean National Team Table Tennis Scandal, Conflict between Son and Lee Kang-in

KOMPAS.com – The Indonesian national team coach, Shin Tae-yong, spoke about the riot scandal in the South Korean national team camp involving Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in.

Son Heung-min was involved in a dispute with a number of young South Korean players before the 0-2 defeat against Jordan in the 2023 Asian Cup semifinals.

The commotion started when Son Heung-min was unhappy with the attitude of the young South Korean players who left the dining table to play table tennis.

The reason is, the Spurs player felt that the dinner session was considered an opportunity to build togetherness in the South Korean squad.

As a result, Son reprimanded the young South Korean players for their position as captain and senior Taeguk Warriors players.

Disputes ensued. Son, who was very angry, grabbed Lee Kang-in by the collar.

Other South Korean players then tried to break up the fight between Son and Lee Kang-in.

The dispute even resulted in an injury to Son Heung-min’s finger. The former Leverkusen striker even played against Jordan with a sprained finger.

Shin Tae-yong, who once coached the South Korean national team, opened his voice regarding the dispute between Son and Lee Kang-in.

According to Shin Tae-yong, wisdom between Son and Lee Kang-in is needed to resolve the problem.

“I know them both,” said Shin Tae-yong, quoted from KBS News on Sunday (18/2/2024).

“When the two of them met again, Son Heung-min, as an older brother, had to hug Lee Kang-in,” said the 53 year old coach with the initials STY.

“While Lee Kang-in admits his mistake to Son, there will be no more problems between the two of them,” said the figure who coached South Korea at the 2018 World Cup.

Meanwhile, the South Korean Football Federation (KFA) admitted that its players were involved in a commotion.

The KFA is also conducting an investigation regarding the “table tennis scandal” in the South Korean national team during the 2023 Asian Cup involving Son and Lee Kang-in.
