Stan Wawrinka (ATP 60) celebrates his first victory in 2024 at the clay court tournament in Buenos Aires. The Vaudois defeated local Pedro Cachin (ATP 74) 6:7 (4:7), 6:1, 6: 2.
Wawrinka showed a mature performance after losing the opening set against the Argentine, who won the tournament in Gstaad last year but is still without a win in 2024 after five games. He didn’t even have to give up his serve. «I was able to get back to my game after the first set. “I was more aggressive and also more flexible,” said the 38-year-old happily at the ATP microphone.
In the round of 16, the three-time Grand Slam winner will face Chilean Nicolas Jarry, winner of the Geneva Open. Wawrinka is hoping to win two games in a row for the first time since the US Open in September. He won his only match so far against the current world number 21 in January 2019 in Doha.
Jarry, who like Wawrinka was eliminated from the Australian Open at the first opportunity, enjoyed a bye in the first round in Buenos Aires due to his status as number 3 seed.
