Some common dilemmas – El Periódico

A dilemma assails the best minds at this point in the season. On Wednesday, while he was at the newspaper watching the PSG-Real Sociedad, Manel wrote to me. It turns out that I had a doubt, also extending to Lazio-Bayern Munich, which required my immediate response. Manel asked me what was best for him in these games, as a Barcelona fan: For the supposedly weak teams to pass the playoffs or for the supposedly best teams to advance? My friend developed his question because I had no answer, no desire. If Real Sociedad and Lazio passed, he explained to me, maybe the Barça had more chances to win Champions this year, but at the same time, and therein lay the gigantic doubt, also the Real Madrid I would be closer to winning it.

The truth is that I answered with a border emoji, one of those that means everything and at the same time means nothing, and that everyone can interpret however they want, because I don’t know what is best for the Barcelona fan. I do know what is best for Manel: look for a more qualified oracle and another friend to give the rod to. In any case, and in reality, this dilemma and the subsequent election teach us quite well what kind of fans and people we are. If we accept the lesser evil (that I don’t win, but that those I hate don’t win either) or we assume the risk that comes with aiming for the jackpot. The position can be extended to numerous vital issues. I’m already moving forward because I’m tired, I’m older and a tie is worth it in almost everything.

For example, I would never risk baptizing my children with a name related to my team. It is a piece of advice that I offer: no matter how much you admire a footballer, the maneuver can always get complicated and ruin it. If the footballer is still active, he can score a crucial own goal, take a fatal penalty or miss the last one in the shootout of a decisive match. And if the footballer has retired, he can become a coach and spoil the memory, or another player with the same name can debut and become your biggest enemy. And then, every time you see your child or hear his name, a negative feeling will permeate you. You will end up taking a shine to your own child, chanting against him and sticking out your elbows to protect your position when you pass him in the hallway. Something that, from what I understand, is not usually well seen or understood very much.

A hope

In the last few hours, yes, I have been a little happy for those Madrid fans who a few years ago called their children Kylian by Kylian Mbappé (they exist, there is data) and that in the latest news coming from Paris they have found hope. I have also been happy for the children, above all. They are not to blame for anything.

The strange thing is that Manel had not written to me before to ask what was best for the Barcelona fan: that Mbappé decided to renew again or leave PSG at the end of this season. Because if he leaves, maybe Barcelona could sign him in some way, but at the same time, and there would be a dilemma, Real Madrid would also be closer to hiring him. Anyway, dear friend, I sense that the tie here would also be to celebrate.
