Ski jumping Wellinger after triumph in Willingen: “Battery is full”

At the home World Cup in Willingen, Andreas Wellinger kept his nerve until the end and surprisingly won. He also wants to take the fun and relaxation with him to the next competitions overseas.
After the unexpected World Cup victory at the end of the home jumping in Willingen, ski jumper Andreas Wellinger is not tired despite many competitions. “The battery is full. Especially with days like today, it’s recharged,” said the 28-year-old Oberstdorfer after his triumph.
In a competition characterized by wind, rain and a lot of waiting, Wellinger improved by six places in the second round and was able to celebrate at the top of the podium at the end. “I really did a great job today and, extremely unexpectedly, I’m at the top of the results list,” summed up the 2018 Olympic champion.
Wellinger is optimistic
With his victory, the Bavarian, currently second in the overall World Cup, gained important points on leader Stefan Kraft, who only finished sixth. On Saturday, the Austrian was surprisingly eliminated after the first jump and therefore didn’t score any points. But Wellinger only came in 17th.
“Anything is possible. We’re just a little over half way now. What’s important is that I ski jump like I did today, I couldn’t do that yesterday,” said Wellinger with a view to the overall World Cup. He has his next chance to do so next weekend. Then there are three competitions in Lake Placid in the USA.
“The challenge will be that we will be moving in very different time zones for the next two weeks. We have to get a good sleep rhythm and be fun and relaxed on the hill,” said Wellinger.
