Hamburger SV has shortened the gap to the direct promotion places in the second division. HSV won to zero on coach Steffen Baumgart’s debut. Düsseldorf also remains in the promotion race. Likewise the people from Fürth, who filmed the Franconian derby.

Hamburger SV secured a hard-earned victory on coach Steffen Baumgart’s debut and shortened the gap to the direct promotion places to one point. The second division soccer team narrowly defeated newly promoted SV Elversberg 1-0 (0-0) on Sunday, ending its series of three defeats at home and remaining without conceding a goal in its own stadium for the first time since November 4th.

“It was tiring, but good. I’ve seen a lot, in both directions. But you can build on that. The boys pushed themselves to the limit against an absolutely strong opponent. We had our chances, but in the end we weren’t any better than Elversberg,” said Baumgart, who coached the game in a black T-shirt with “Moin” written on it.

Ransford Königsdörffer provided the sporting greeting to the fans, scoring the only goal in front of 54,190 spectators in the Volksparkstadion (53rd). City rivals FC St. Pauli and Holstein Kiel are still ahead of third-placed HSV in the table after 23 match days. After Tim Walter left, Baumgart started his new job at HSV on Tuesday.

The hosts initially started boldly. Königsdörffer (5th), who was new to the starting line-up, was denied by goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof from a promising position in front of the Saarland goal. As the first half progressed, Elversberger came into the HSV penalty area more and more often and missed the opening goal twice shortly before the end of the first half.

HSV seemed unsettled. It was only the goal after the break that inspired the hosts. However, the Rothosen did not play their numerous switching actions cleanly. Shortly before the end (88th), Hugo Vandermersch narrowly missed the equalizer for the Elversberg team, who were courageous over long stretches.

Düsseldorf takes advantage of the mistakes

Fortuna Düsseldorf has seized the opportunity and is still involved in the promotion race. In the 2-0 (2-0) against second-to-last team Hansa Rostock, the cup semi-finalists achieved their first win in the sixth game of the second half of the season and are now five points behind third and sixth place after the defeats of the teams ahead of them from Kiel and Hanover Counter to a direct promotion place.

Meanwhile, Düsseldorf is still not a good place for Hansa, Rostock only won one of ten games in the Rhineland: In 1996 there was a 2-0 win in the Bundesliga with players like Stefan Beinlich, Sergej Barbarez and Steffen Baumgart. Rostock has currently only won one of six games under new coach Mersad Selimbegovic.

Felix Klaus put Fortuna in the lead with a great volley shot from the outside of the foot (16th), Ao Tanaka quickly followed up with a 20-meter shot (18th). Rostock didn’t give up after that and had a few chances, such as a shot off the post by Svante Ingelsson (42′).

Fürth wins the Franconian derby

With the prestigious win in the 272nd Frankenderby against 1. FC Nürnberg, SpVgg Greuther Fürth ended their low result and stayed in the promotion places. In the lively Franconian neighborhood duel, striker Armindo Sieb became the match winner with a brace at 2:1 (1:1). Thanks to 56 minutes in the majority after a yellow-red card against Jens Castrop (34th), the Fürth team redeemed themselves after three defeats in a row and are fourth, only three points behind Hamburger SV in third place.

In front of 16,126 spectators in the Ronhof sports park, winter newcomer Sebastian Andersson (8th) used a slightly deflected cross from Benjamin Goller with his head to give Nuremberg the lead. Goller missed a huge chance to make it 2-0 in the 25th minute when he hit the right post in front of goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.

The Fürth attacker Sieb (27th, 56th) scored twice with full force on the other side and was greeted with applause when he was substituted (79th). Nuremberg goalkeeper Carl Klaus just steered a shot from captain Branimir Hrgota’s turn (47th) onto the post. The Fürth team showed themselves to be very agile in the traditional duel and, thanks to their superiority, had significantly more possession of the ball than the Nuremberg team, who have not won in five games. Shortly before the end, Urbig saved Fürth with a shot from Kanji Okunuki.
