Sebastian Schonlau shines in HSV’s solid defensive performance under Steffen Baumgart

Sebastian Schonlau (29) was in the starting line-up for the first time since the preliminary round final in Nuremberg (2-0) against Elversberg (1-0). The calf didn’t cause any problems for the HSV captain.

Schonlau: “I’m really happy. It held everything. I’m also confident that it will continue to hold up. I have been like that many times, but now it can continue like this.”

BILD: After three home defeats in the 2nd league, finally a threesome in the Volkspark again.

Schonlau: “Played to zero, won – that’s fun.”

You know Steffen Baumgart best in the team from your time together in Paderborn. How much of their style of play has HSV already implemented after the first week?

“Of course we still need some time to internalize it more and more. Then maybe things will look a little better. In one or two situations you noticed that we were a little too late. But that’s normal after a week. But I think that you have already seen Baumgart’s signature in terms of energy and intensity.”

Your team was pretty solid defensively. What was your impression?

“I thought so too. You saw what we were up to. We won a lot of the ball in both the first and second half. We may not have been able to take full advantage of it, but the scoring opportunities were definitely there. Of course, this will impress an opponent. Sure, they have one chance at the end, that’s why we have Raab. He holds the ball, he does it really well.”

You played under Baumgart in Paderborn. Has he changed?

“No, he’s just a guy and he lives football. He drilled that into us from the start. He didn’t wait a second to show us which direction this was going to take. We can only be happy about that.”

They both left Paderborn in 2021. Baumgart moved to Cologne, you to HSV. It is said that he wanted to convince you to move to FC. How was it?

“That was in the room. And I talked to him about it too. In the end it just didn’t work out that way. I’m glad I went to HSV. I think he was also happy at the time that he went to Cologne. The fact that we can now work together again here and have a really big goal is also a nice story.”
