Sebastián Báez and His Humble Approach to Defending His Title at the Córdoba Open 2024

Sebastián Báez imposed his humility in each response in his press conference at the Córdoba Open 2024. He came from being the hero in the Davis Cup, winning the fifth point against Kasakhstan, and yet he tried to lower the decibels of that feat. “Every week is different, so all I want is to have the best possible tournament in Córdoba. What happened in Rosario was nice, but you always have to turn the page and focus on what is coming,” he expressed.

Báez, 23 years old and ranked 26th in the ATP ranking, is not talking about “repeating” the title he achieved last year.

He only talks about going “game by game.” And the first crossing in his path will be against the Bolivian Hugo Dellien, 30 years old and ranked 111th in the world rankings. “I was watching him for a while yesterday while I was training. There will be time to prepare for that match,” he highlighted with great calm. That match would be played on Thursday.

And he expanded: “I know Córdoba, the conditions of the tournament, the altitude, the temperature. So I hope to be in good shape.”

Looking at the objectives for the season, Báez responded to La Voz that he does not have a specific ranking goal. “I just want to feel that at the end of the season I have improved. I don’t set a goal like ranking or something similar. “Just managing what is in my hands as best as possible.”

There is the champion, Sebastián Báez… waiting for Córdoba to be a place where he can be happy again.

And before leaving the conference room he got into a one-on-one with The Voice to talk about things that are not strictly tennis

–If you had not been a tennis player… what would you have been?

–I think he is a footballer, without a doubt.

-What team do you follow?

-From Racing de Avellaneda.

–Which Racing player did you admire?

–Enzo Copetti… I know he didn’t go well… but I liked his attitude and his way of playing.

–If you were a soccer player… what kind of player would you have been?

–And… I don’t know… a brave one… one of those who make everything simple, ha, ha.

-A footballer you admire?

–Taking out Messi, I would say Maradona. For everything Diego meant to Argentina. I liked his character, his way of competing and how he defended the colors of Argentina. Yes, yes, Maradona definitely.

–The worst thing about being a professional tennis player?

–Being away from the country for so long. There are many and if you are not winning… it gets difficult.

–The best thing about being a tennis player?

–Everything else, ha, ha… It’s a nice job and I like doing it…

And this is how Sebastián Báez spent the day of the press conference in Córdoba. The time will come to have to play to defend his crown.
