The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed American receiver Dazz Newsome.

The five-foot-ten, 184-pound target was selected in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears and played three regular season games with the team, making two catches for 23 yards and returning six punts for 75 yards.

The 24-year-old was waived by the Bears at the conclusion of training camp in 2022 and later signed with the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, though he never dressed for a regular season game with either club.

The native of Hampton, Va. converted from defensive back to receiver while playing collegiately at the University of North Carolina, making 188 catches for 2,435 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Newsome was also an effective returner with the Tar Heels, bringing back 48 punts for 535 yards and one touchdown and seven kickoffs for 144 yards. He was named second-team All-ACC as a junior and All-ACC honourable mention in 2020.

Saskatchewan will open its 2024 regular season on Saturday, June 8 when they visit the Edmonton Elks at Commonwealth Stadium.
