Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean Athletes Ready to Compete in Quebec Games

It’s official, the regional delegation for the next Quebec Games, which will take place in Sherbrooke from March 1 to 9, is now known. 114 athletes from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean will represent the region.

Parents, friends and sports fans will be able to closely monitor regional teams in 11 disciplines this year. We are talking here about badminton, Olympic boxing, gymnastics, men’s and women’s hockey, men’s and women’s curling, figure skating and speed skating, weightlifting, judo, cross-country skiing and Table tennis.

We can also note the return of teams from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean in cross-country skiing as well as Olympic boxing. Two disciplines which had no representatives during the last Games.

“For cross-country skiing, with the pandemic, it has been more difficult in the region. But there is a lot of work that has been accomplished by the Regional Association and by the clubs in order to develop high-caliber athletes,” comments the coordinator at the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean Recreation and Sports Regroupment, Frédéric Bouchard.

“As for boxing, last year we didn’t have any boxers for the Games, but this year, we’re bringing two! So we’re back in two sports, which is no small thing. »

Thus, we will find athletes in the vast majority of disciplines for the Sherbrooke Games.

Good position

According to Frédéric Bouchard, having so many athletes in the majority of sports for these Winter Games proves that the region is doing very well in developing talent.

“When we compare ourselves, we can see that we do things well at home. We don’t have the most populous region, but despite everything, we don’t give up our place and we compete hard. There is still some development to do, but we are doing very well. »

To monitor

The region’s curling teams will be ones to watch at the next Games. The women’s team will defend its 2nd position obtained last year, while the men’s team will try to improve on its 6th place.

In judo, the region’s athletes are always formidable. It is possible to believe that the representatives from here will stand out again this year.

Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean is still doing very well in speed skating, so it will be good to keep a close eye on this discipline.

“And we have a table tennis player who could hardly sell his skin…”, underlines Frédéric Bouchard.
