Rising Popularity of Badminton in Haute-Loire: A Competitive and Cordial Sport

Did you say “beach sport”?

Badminton is on the rise in Haute-Loire. Aurélie Liogier, co-president of the Badminton Club de l’Emblavez describes it: “Badminton is an intergenerational sport in which everyone finds something to benefit them. A complete sport which requires cardio and physical strength, which allows those who practice it to exercise in a friendly atmosphere.” When we observe these badminton players (that’s the name of the badminton player!), when we see the shuttlecocks flying and the bodies rushing, we quickly understand that we are very far from the peaceful image of beach sport. often conveyed.

French badminton in figures

– more than 200,000 licensees

– 1935 clubs in France

– 64% men and 36% women

– from 200 to 300 km/h for the best smashes!

– 5 grams for a steering wheel

Also, the general public was not mistaken and the counters are panicking. Stéphane Crespin, president of the Departmental Badminton Committee proudly announces: “Badminton in Haute-Loire has 495 members, including around 180 young people. The best thing about our small committee is being serious without taking ourselves seriously. It’s incredible work that has been accomplished by the “CODEP team and the different clubs to give everyone the opportunity to play.”

Aurore Treille, co-president of Brives-Charensac adds: “We hope that with the enthusiasm around our discipline, we will find funding and sponsors more easily, but also that the infrastructure will follow. Our events are increasing but their organization is often complicated by competition from other very popular sports such as basketball or handball. Furthermore, communities do not always take into account our regulatory requirements and it is not uncommon that, apart from a few centimeters or details, a gymnasium cannot be used as a reception structure. Haute-Loire is now teeming with successful badminton clubs organizing official tournaments: Brioude, Brives-Charensac, Langeac, Lavoûte-sur-Loire, St-Romain-Lachalm, Sainte-Sigolène and Yssingeaux.

The Brivois badists: first in division 1

Alongside these individual tournaments, interclub team tournaments take place. This year is “historic” in the world of Altiligère badminton: in the different divisions, no less than 202 players spread over 20 teams competed. Each is aiming for the holy grail: finishing first in their division. But for Jérémy Ducreux, president of the Yssingeaux badminton club, these interclubs are also “the opportunity to meet people we are not used to playing against. It makes for good discoveries, we progress and the atmosphere is good. I am proud of the result of our teams.”

Even in competition, cordiality is essential in badminton (Brioude / Lavoûte)

This season, it is the Brioude club which wins division 2 ahead of Emblavez. The Brivois won division 1 ahead of Langogne and Yssingeaux. It must be said that since their last place in regional 3 last year (which allowed them to go down to the departmental level), the Brives-Charensac club has cultivated a spirit of revenge.

The arrival of very good players strengthened the team already in place, and under the emulation of this renewal, they won the various matches 7 to 0. However, this Sunday February 25, the last day of interclub, they trembled against Langogne: after winning the first leg 5-2, it was with this same result that they lost yesterday. Despite this single defeat, team 1 of BC²V43 finished first in division 1 and thus reached the play-offs which will take place on May 4 and 5. Emma Davies, captain of team 1 of Brives concludes: “I am very proud of our progress this season, and of the state of mind shown by my team. Now the biggest challenge comes with the play-offs, where we will give everything to have our place in R3. It will be difficult, but we will fight until the end so that Haute-Loire is represented again at regional level!”
