The presentation of the new MLB uniforms, designed by Nike and Fanatics, is a topic that generates a lot of opinions, from scathing criticism to unexpected praise.
The latest MLB uniforms are sharing the spotlight with the players’ performances in training camps.
Teams already sport these uniforms, specifically designed to increase performance and comfort during grueling summer games.
According to MLB officials, the new kit offers 25% more elasticity and dries 28% faster. However, the reaction of the players has been mixed.
Will the resistance to the new uniforms be temporary?
Nike has been at the forefront of the uniform design since 2020, and Fanatics since 2017. This year, however, sees the debut of the Nike Vapor Premier jerseys. Reducing the size of the letters, sleeve emblems and numbers allows the fabric to be more breathable and comfortable.
Commissioner Rob Manfred predicts the criticism will eventually subside. “In baseball, any novel initiative is often met with initial resistance,” Manfred acknowledged last Thursday.
“First and foremost, these are Nike jerseys. We partner with Nike because of their reputation and the quality of their products. “So far, the partnership has been a resounding success.”
Fanatics representatives declined to comment, and Nike did not respond to an email sent to its press office. Manfred fondly recalled the good reception of the uniforms during his presentation at last year’s All-Star Game.
Some players approve of new MLB uniforms
Despite the continued controversy over the uniforms, some players have praised the new attire. Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels outfielder and three-time American League MVP, posted on Social Network
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner expressed his perspective last Friday: “I know everyone hates him. We all preferred what we had. “We understand the business, but I think we all wanted to stick with what we had, mostly with little tweaks here and there.”
Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Jason Heyward shared in a team video on X: “Interestingly, it feels more authentic than our previous uniforms. The material feels superior. It feels more breathable.”
