Public sector employees in Hesse demand fair pay increases at rally in Fulda

After the inconclusive first round of negotiations with the state of Hesse, 500 public sector employees called for more accommodation at a rally in Fulda.

Volker Geyer, dbb collective bargaining chief and negotiator, made it clear at the rally on February 27, 2024: “Unfortunately, the employers have rejected our demands. We have therefore gathered here in Fulda to draw attention to the situation in the public service and to our demands.” The dbb hears the argument from the other side that there is not enough money and the demands are exaggerated in every negotiation. “But our demands are appropriate, realistic and, above all, necessary,” emphasized Geyer. “Public sector pay must keep up with inflation. We see the average inflation rate of six percent, but we also see the personal inflation rate of employees. And that is well above average.” Food prices alone have risen over 20 percent. Geyer continues: “Remunerations cannot be allowed to keep up with the rising cost of living forever. We therefore demand that the state of Hesse increase fees by 10.5 percent, but at least by 500 euros. We are also demanding a pay increase of 260 euros for trainees and interns.”

Heini Schmitt, chairman of dbb Hessen, added: “The keyword ‘keep up’ also applies in other areas of pay: the result of the collective agreement must be transferred to the civil servants and pension recipients at the same time and in accordance with the system. This is the only way we can get closer to constitutionally compliant alimentation.” Hesse also has to “keep up” with the other federal states, explained Schmitt. “Hesse must not be worse off than the other federal states when it comes to pay. In addition, the public service must be able to keep up with the private sector. We must not worsen the already tense personnel situation by losing skilled workers to other federal states or the private sector.” There are still many construction sites, but Schmitt is hoping for constructive discussions in the next round of negotiations.
