Pilato and Castiglioni out in the 100 breaststroke. The Italians in the race and where to see them – Corriere.it

Pilate, advance with difficulty

There is no shortage of surprises at these World Championships in Doha: Benedetta Pilato, in the women’s 100 breaststroke (it is the first real test of the new Benny, after the revolution that brought her to Turin, to train with Antonio Satta, together with Miressi and Viberti) he struggled more than expected in the heats but with 1’07”24 (tenth overall time) he passed the round. Arianna Castiglioni also did it in 1’07”48, but she would have needed to improve a lot to get to the final. They don’t make it and, unfortunately, they both exit: Benny as the first eliminated in 1’06″30 and Arianna as the last, in 1’07″91. «I changed my attitude compared to this morning, I attacked the race, perhaps I even went too fast at 50 – commented Pilato disconsolately – But in the last 15 I no longer had any. I’m sorry because it was an occasion, there’s a bit of regret, apart from the first one all the others swam times which I’ve done a thousand times in all conditions. The way I feel in training I thought I would do less.”

No problem for Simona Quadarella in the 1500m who qualified with the best time in the heat (16’02”96). SuperSimo seeks satisfaction without the all-time champion Katie Ledecky and before that a pass to Paris. «This is the goal, if 1-2 medals then come… I don’t feel in great shape but I didn’t want to skip this World Championship, I need it to compete in the race, in Italy I can’t swim certain times without opponents».

Michele Lamberti also qualified for the semifinals in the 100 backstroke, but missed the final, and debutant Francesca Pasquino.
