This year, the 100-year-old Iranian Taghi Askari is competing in the world water sports championship, CNN reports.
Since the first time the Iranian won a silver and bronze medal at the Asian Games in 1951, Askari has never lost his passion for this sport – diving.
“I have had a love for diving since I was a teenager until now. I have always loved diving. From 1951 to today, nothing much has changed except my performance!” Askari enthusiastically tells World Aquatics.
Askari encountered diving for the first time as a child, visiting the local swimming pool with other children. It instilled in him a lifelong love of diving.
“When I competed at national level, the last championships I competed in was when I was 41,” he said. “I won a gold medal at the national level and after that I said goodbye to the sport, but at least with a gold medal.”
The sport has changed a lot in the time since Askari started diving until today.
The Iranian will be among the competitors at the World Aquatics Masters, a competition that takes place shortly after the elite world championships, which is open to participants aged 25 and over.
