PGA Tour leader Knapp, Trainer closes in on top 10

During the night from Saturday to Sunday, the third round of the Mexico Open ended in Vallarta. Jake Knapp has escaped to the top of the rankings while Martin Trainer is eyeing the top 10. Victor Perez remains further back.

Jake Knapp in ideal position in Mexico. Already present in the leading quartet at the end of the cut, the rookie seized the leadership chair alone and with authority this Saturday by returning a formidable card of 63 (-19 total). The Californian, who is only playing his ninth tournament on the PGA Tour, got off to a flying start, scoring seven birdies on the first leg. On the return, he was more inconsistent (three bogeys) but was able to bounce back from each error by making four more birdies.

“Obviously I can’t complain. I feel like I hit the ball pretty much the same as the last two days. I hit it well, I was able to make a few more putts. Once I got two in early in the game, it felt like everything was going in for a little while. I feel like I know how to behave, how to handle the situation. Obviously, the fact of having been in the race at Farmers Insurance (end of January, where he finished 3rd) also helped me,” reacted the 29-year-old who could soon win his first title on the American circuit.
