Peru to Face Switzerland in Upcoming Davis Cup Match: A Challenging Opportunity Ahead

The recent defeat against Chile in the Davis Cup Qualifiers is now a thing of the past and Peru will have to turn the page quickly, since the challenges ahead will be just as complicated, but not difficult to face after what was seen in Santiago. Thus, this Thursday the International Tennis Federation (ITF) drew lots for the matches of World Group I and II of said tournament, where our compatriots were paired with Switzerland and will seek to remain as visitors. Quite a challenge for the team led by Luis Horna.

This will be a beautiful opportunity for ‘Team Peru’ to rub shoulders with great opponents, since the Swiss team has Stan Wawrinka as its greatest asset. The 38-year-old tennis player is currently ranked 40th in the ATP rankings, but has reached number 3 in the world in his prime. Although there is a long way to go before this crossing, scheduled for the month of September, ‘Lucho’ Horna will have to put together a great squad to be up to the task.

In addition to Wawrinka, the European team is made up of Marc-Andrea Huesler, Dominic Stricker, Leandro Riedi and Alexander Ritschard. Likewise, Peru has these representatives: Juan Pablo Varillas, Gonzalo Bueno, Ignacio Buse, Arklon Huertas del Pino and Conner Huertas del Pino. We have to trust in the talent of our compatriots, because despite the defeat against Chile last weekend, they fought until the last game.

In another key of World Group I, Croatia will compete with Lithuania, while Sweden, another of the favorites to continue advancing in the Davis Cup, will face India. Regarding World Group II, Romania will meet China; Meanwhile, Ecuador will do the same with Hong Kong. Be careful, there are still no exact dates for these matches, but the International Tennis Federation will surely announce it soon.

As established in the Davis Cup format, the winners of World Group I and II will compete in the Qualifiers of the 2025 edition, which will allow them to fight for a place in the Davis Cup Finals of that year. The road will be long, but Peru, with a team that will add more games and experience in the coming months, has the arguments to face these great opponents.

What is the format of the Davis Cup?

The Group Stage of the 2024 Davis Cup Finals will also take place from September 10 to 15, meaning 64 nations will be competing at different levels of Davis Cup during the week starting September 9. The date of the draw for the Group Stage of the final will be announced soon. The winning nations from the World Group I qualifiers will advance to the 2025 Davis Cup Qualifiers, giving those teams the opportunity to fight for a spot in the 2025 Davis Cup Finals.

The losing nations of the World Group I qualifiers and the winning nations of the World Group II qualifiers will participate in the 2025 World Group I qualifiers. On the other hand, the losing nations of the World Group II qualifiers will be in the qualifiers from the 2025 World Group II along with the best performing teams in the 2024 Group III regional events.
