Patrick Mahomes Aims for Historic Three-Peat After Kansas City Chiefs Win Super Bowl

After this Wednesday theThe Chiefs parade in the streets of Kansas City to celebrate that they managed to win the Super Bowl for the second consecutive year, the quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, expressed his desire to win the Vince Lombardi trophy again next year.

Before the crowd gathered at Union Station, Mahomes indicated that They will seek a third consecutive title.

We are going for that triplet (…) we are doing it. Three times. The first time in the history of the NFL, we are doing it,” the player said before the Chiefs fans.

The Chiefs, looking to make history

AP reminds that The Kansas City Chiefs ended a drought of almost two decades without a repeat champion in the NFL. And now they will seek three straight victories in the Super Bowl, something unprecedented.

The team defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime to win the Super Bowl last Sunday, following another three-point victory over Philadelphia a year ago.

Kansas City became the first team since the New England Patriots in 2003-04 to win consecutive titles, ending the longest streak without a repeat champion in NFL history.

Statistics show that the treble does not seem easy to achieve

The Chiefs are the ninth team to win consecutive Super Bowl titles since the game was created in the 1966 season to face the NFL and AFL champions.

None of the teams that won back-to-back Super Bowls even returned to the title game the following season. and three fell short in the conference championship games.

Pittsburgh lost to the Oakland Raiders in the 1976 AFC title game after winning it the previous two seasons, San Francisco fell to the New York Giants in the 1990 NFC title game to end a bid for three titles and Dallas lost to the 49ers four years later.

The Patriots fell short in the divisional round after their back-to-back championships and Miami did the same in the 1974 season. The other three repeat champions failed to make the playoffs: the 1968 Green Bay Packers, the 1980 Steelers and the 1999 Denver Broncos.

It has been more than two decades since a team won three titles in the NFL, NBA, NHL or Major League Baseball.

Los Angeles Lakers They were the last to do so in any of those leagues, winning the NBA Finals between 2000 and 2002.

The New York Yankees were the last baseball team to do so from 1998 to 2000 and the New York Islanders were the last in the NHL from 1980 to 1983.

Mahomes, key piece in the search for the triplet

Patrick Mahomes is truly the comeback guy in the postseason after rallying the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl title in five seasons.

Mahomes has trailed by double digits in all three of his Super Bowl victories, and also led comebacks against the 49ers in the 2019 season and Philadelphia last season. All other quarterbacks have combined to do it four times in 52 attempts, with Tom Brady doing it in two of his seven championships and Doug Williams and Drew Brees doing it once.

Patrick has made five double-digit comebacks in his playoff career in seven tries, one shy of Brady’s career-high made in 14 tries. While Mahomes has a .714 mark in that scenario, all other quarterbacks have just a .127 mark since QB starts began being tracked in 1950.

At 28 years old, Mahomes is close to matching the accomplishments of every quarterback in the playoff race except Brady.

His 15 playoff wins are one behind Joe Montana, which ranks second behind Brady’s 35, and he is one of five quarterbacks with three Super Bowl wins. Brady has seven, Montana and Terry Bradshaw have four and Troy Aikman has three.

Mahomes has already surpassed Peyton Manning to occupy fifth place with 41 touchdown passes in his postseason run and needs just four more to catch Montana and Aaron Rodgers for second place. Brady leads that category with 88.
