Otero’s exciting talk at a reception project for immigrants: “When I was eleven years old I helped my father in the mine, I played soccer barefoot”

Juan Otero, Sporting de Gijón player born in Colombia, offered a talk this Wednesday with a group of young people, some recently arrived in Asturias, and whom the Red Cross helps in their social integration upon their arrival in Spain. Gerardo García, Sporting’s director of sports management, was also present at the meeting. Otero, deeply rooted in his origins, told those present the story of his overcoming through his humble beginnings in Sipí, where his entire family is located. Otero began helping his father in the mine; and now he recognizes that his path in sport allows him to help them financially, something that fills him with pride. “When I was ten years old, when I was eleven… I helped my father in the mine. I left my family, but I came home to help…. “Now I can help my family. My family is my greatest motivation,” Otero explained to those present. “, explained the striker at the meeting to those in attendance. “I liked studying and I liked football. I played in the town, barefoot, in the dirt. A scout saw me and took me to the city, and that’s how I started. At 14 years old I started in my first club.”

“I am here with a lot of sacrifice, I always give everything. In the locker room we are a family, we all have the same goal. The best thing about Sporting is the team, without a doubt,” he responded to questions from the young attendees. “What do I like most about football? “That you do it out of passion!” Said the attacker, as recognized by the rojiblanco club in his official account.
