Oliver Glasner Takes over as Crystal Palace Manager after Roy Hodgson’s Resignation

Austrian coach Oliver Glasner has found a new job around seven months after his departure from Bundesliga soccer team Eintracht Frankfurt. The 49-year-old was introduced as the new team manager at Premier League relegation candidate Crystal Palace on Monday shortly after English record coach Roy Hodgson’s health-related resignation.

“Oliver has achieved excellent results in his career,” Crystal Palace boss Steve Paris praised his new team manager with a view to Glasner’s Europa League triumph in 2022 as Frankfurt head coach.

It initially remained unclear whether the ex-professional would be on the bench in the Londoners’ duel against Everton FC later in the evening. Hodgson’s previous assistants Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington were originally slated for the job.

Hodgson cleared the way for Glasner’s signing by leaving a few days after his sudden hospital admission. “Under the circumstances, I am making space so that the club can be prudent and press ahead with its plans for the engagement of a new team manager, which were already planned for the summer,” said the 76-year-old, explaining his decision to end his second coaching engagement at his first station as a professional player. England’s former team manager had already become the oldest coach of a Premier League team at Watford FC at the beginning of 2022.

The veteran of the British coaching guild had to stop his team’s training last Thursday and was taken to a clinic. More detailed information about his health problems is not known; the hospital later only spoke of his “stable condition” and the need for further tests. But returning to the training field was no longer an option for the time being.

In addition to his four-year stint as team manager of the Three Lions from 2012 to 2016, with one World Cup participation and two European Championship tournaments, Hodgson also worked as a national coach for Switzerland (1992 to 1995) and Finland (2006 to 2007). At club level, Hodgson’s most prominent clubs included Inter Milan and Liverpool FC.

For Glasner, Crystal Palace is the third coaching position outside of his home country. Before his two-year stint at Eintracht Frankfurt, the former defender was also in charge of Frankfurt’s Bundesliga rivals VfL Wolfsburg for 24 months.
