HERCULANEUM/NAPLES. «No alibi, fight! And by fighting I don’t mean Judo techniques, but learning to react to the various ‘excuses’ that are around us. My advice is to always improve. I don’t think the important thing is just to participate, but give your best. Sacrifices will shape your character, they will always help you”: this is the motto and message of Pino Maddaloni, Olympic medal for judoto the students of“De Curtis – Ungaretti Comprehensive Institute of Ercolano” on the occasion of “Game Over”the project against cyberbullying promoted in synergy with CoreCom Campania and the Punto ea Capo association.
He is moved during the screening of the film “The Gold of Scampia” which tells his story as an athlete. “Remember, no one gives you anything”, is one of the most emblematic phrases of the film which traces the challenge of the athlete who brought the Sails of Scampia on the roof of the world.
«In Scampia there was only one bus, I could not go to school, create an alibi. Instead, I didn’t like being late – Olympic gold persists – I’m lucky because I had to overcome many obstacles: just to practice my discipline and get to the gym I took three buses. We made a dream come true. The important thing is ‘how much’ you commit to life, how true and sincere you are. It’s not the media or money that gives you motivation, but memories and who you are today. Sport is training, education. It’s not just winning medals, but it’s full of values: respect for the rules and for others, you learn to recognize sacrifice and love it».

And then, on the future of the young generations he adds Principal Cagnazzo: «We have to work a lot because our territories are really difficult. The whole school participates in the only truly precious purpose, which isintegrity of our young people. I want to fill our school with kids musically oriented, with positive activities: music, art, culture, sport. We can also open it in the afternoon, if the institutions allow us. It’s a complex battle, because in the South we have to work twice as hard, but we will make it, I’m sure of it. Ercolano is one of the areas at risk, but there are others, such as Scampia or Caivano. So many realities that need to be supported. The school remained one of the few educational agencies. We have a high dropout rate, bullying is invading our lives, so let’s go back to school, places of safety to build tomorrow. The school must open in the afternoon, it must be able to welcome its children, because, how Pino Maddaloni teaches us, evolution is in their hearts first, and then in their minds. He outlined an idea of dignity, of resilience to move forward without fear, with head held high, enduring even difficult things, one step at a time, towards great things».
