NFL Players Grade Their Teams for 2024 Season: Miami Dolphins Lead the Pack

For the second year in a row, NFL players sent their teams a report card, grading their clubs on 11 categories — including the treatment of their families, the quality of cafeteria food and workout facilities and the team policies for when they play on the road. And the league-average GPA was a 2.56 — not quite a B- average, but a smidge better than a C+.

To get a better understanding of the letter grades compiled for the NFL Players’ Association, The Athletic used the ratings to calculate each team’s cumulative GPA, in the same way high schoolers and college students are assessed after each term. The GPAs are not weighted, so the rankings they generate differ from weighted rankings that were released by the NFLPA, which did not include details about its weighting system in the data it published.

Each team’s GPA is in the table below.

The Miami Dolphins — with an impressive 3.94 — were at the top of the class. They were one of only two teams, along with the Minnesota Vikings, to finish with better than a 3.5.

The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, meanwhile, finished last with a 1.24 — perhaps D’s do get degrees — behind the 1.36 earned by the Commanders. (Washington was rated last in the NFLPA rankings.)

NFLPA report cards: Every team’s GPA

In 2023, the league had a B- average, and much like last year the grades show plenty of room for improvement for each team.

The report cards include grades from 1,706 players — about 77 percent of the league — from all 32 teams. Each player assessed their employer around the beginning of last season on 11 categories covering different working conditions and environments:

  • Treatment of families
  • Food/cafeteria
  • Nutritionist/dietician
  • Locker room
  • Training room
  • Training staff
  • Weight room
  • Strength coaches
  • Team travel
  • Head coach
  • Ownership

Teams were given an overall score based on “a weighted combination of grades” for the categories, the NFLPA said.

Here are some other insights from our analysis:

  • Players on average graded their head coach at around a B+ (3.39), the highest of all the categories. Treatment of families was the lowest category, with a C- (1.78).
  • The athletes handed out a tidy 32 F’s in categories across the NFL — but that wasn’t one F for each team. Only 12 teams got a failing grade in one of their categories. The Commanders had five and the Chiefs had four.
  • The NFLPA’s weighted ratings slightly helped Green Bay and Jacksonville relative to their rivals, moving them up two spots each in the rankings relative to their raw GPAs. Houston saw the biggest drop, from the third-highest GPA to the seventh-highest organizational ranking.
