A 15-seater monorail runs in Daehyeon Mountain Reservoir Park in downtown Seoul. Residents are expected to be able to more conveniently enjoy various facilities, such as the lawn plaza and badminton court, within Suji Park, which were difficult to access due to the steep stairs.

Jung-gu held the ‘monorail’ opening ceremony at the entrance of Donghwa-dong Community Center and Bae Suji Park at around 3:30 pm on the 15th. This is the first time in Seoul that a monorail is being introduced as a means of transportation within the park.

Daehyeon Mountain Reservoir Park is a park located between Sindang-dong, Jung-gu and Geumho-dong, Seongdong-gu. It is a favorite place for residents as it has a variety of exercise facilities, including a lawn plaza, jogging track, and badminton. However, there have been a series of complaints that access is difficult because you have to climb steep stairs about 110 meters long or use a bypass road about 770 meters long.

The monorail runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day on a 110-meter track from Shindang Hyundai Apartment to Daehyeon Mountain Reservoir Park. There are three platforms: the starting point, Shindang Hyundai Apartment (midpoint), and the final point. Capacity is 15 people, and wheelchairs and baby carriages can also be used.

A round trip from the monorail platform to the entrance of Daehyeon Mountain Reservoir Park takes 6 to 7 minutes. It takes 3 to 4 minutes one way. Anyone can ride for free as it is a self-driving car that moves automatically when you press the start button.

The district has been conducting a feasibility study on the Daehyeon Mountain Monorail since 2019, and in 2020, the ‘Daehyeon Mountain Drainage Park Access Road Improvement Project’ was selected for the ‘Resident Contest Project for the Improvement of Travel Convenience in Hilly Areas’ hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. The district has been establishing a basic plan since May 2020, collecting opinions from nearby residents, and also preparing measures regarding monorail noise and invasion of privacy.

Convenient use for local residents… “As a local landmark”

With the opening of the Daehyeonsan Reservoir Park Monorail, it is expected that local residents, including those with walking disabilities, will be able to use Daehyeonsan Reservoir Park conveniently and safely. In addition, if the monorail emerges as a local landmark, it is expected that tourists visiting ‘Hipdang-dong (hip Sindang-dong)’ will continue to Jungang Market, Baekhak Market, and Daehyeonsan Mountain Reservoir.

Jung-gu Mayor Kim Gil-seong said, “The opening of the Daehyeonsan Reservoir Park monorail is proof that Jung-gu is making a lot of effort for the transportation vulnerable, such as the elderly.” He added, “Previously, it was difficult for the transportation vulnerable, such as the elderly and children, to climb the high stairs, but we will make it easier for our residents to use it.” “It has become a great facility where we can do our best,” he said. He emphasized, “There may be concerns that the window of your home may be visible or noise coming from the monorail, but we will take good care of it at the district level.”
