Improved accessibility for people with mobility impairments in ‘steep sections’

A monorail has opened next to an apartment complex in the heart of downtown Seoul. Although it is a short section of about 100m, it is expected to greatly increase the convenience of residents as it is installed in a hilly area.
Jung-gu announced on the 16th that the monorail line between Shindang Hyundai Apartment in Donghwa-dong and Daehyeonsan Reservoir Park held an opening ceremony on the 15th and began operation. This is the first time that a monorail has been installed as a means of transportation in downtown Seoul.
The 15-passenger monorail operates free of charge from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is an unmanned driving system that moves automatically when the passenger presses a button. There are three platforms in total: the starting point, the ending point, and the middle point. Wheelchairs and strollers can also ride. It takes 3 to 4 minutes to reach the park from the bottom of the hill.
Daehyeonsan Reservoir Park is a space created on a 75,570㎡ drainage basin between Sindang-dong, Jung-gu and Geumho-dong, Seongdong-gu. A variety of sports facilities, including a grass plaza and multi-purpose stadium, as well as a jogging track, badminton court, tennis court, and gateball court, are built and are visited by many citizens.
However, accessibility for people with mobility impairments was limited due to the need to climb a steep staircase approximately 110 meters long to reach the park entrance. When it rains and snow, accidents occur where residents slip and fall on the stairs.
Accordingly, Jung-gu participated in the residents’ contest for the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s ‘Hillland Movement Convenience Improvement Project’ in 2020, and the park entrance road was selected as the project target, and construction began in 2022.
An official from Jung-gu explained, “We encountered difficulties in construction due to the steep and narrow terrain of the site. Since the monorail is adjacent to an apartment building, we received a complaint requesting privacy, so we accommodated this by covering the monorail window.”
