Napoli-Verona (2-1) – Scattered Considerations

After a partially encouraging first half, Napoli overturned Verona thanks to Mazzarri’s substitutions.

Mazzarri has decided for this Napoli-Verona to rely again on a 4-3-3 of Spalletti’s memory after having proposed the three-man defense for a few outings. Anguissa returns to the starting lineup after being eliminated in the Africa Cup of Nations by teammate Osimhen’s Nigeria, with Kvaratskhelia, Politano and Simeone making up the attacking trident. Baroni, on the other hand, who lost fifteen members of his squad in this winter session, confirms the eleven who played with Frosinone (aside from Coppola who takes over from Magnani) in an attempt to provide continuity and gradually insert the many new players grafts.

During the first phase of the match the intention of Mazzarri’s men to win the match was clear, with Kvaratskhelia who put Montipò to the test with an attempted right foot and one left foot. In particular, on the second occasion for the Georgian, the goalkeeper made a very complicated save, managing to intercept the ball even though he didn’t see the shot go. In addition to this, during the first half of the game, Napoli is unable to make itself dangerous consistently, with a square and intense Verona that presses with order, prevents a clean first construction and effectively shields Lobotka. The feeling, particularly in the first few minutes, is that the quality of the Italian champions could prevail over the physicality of the Scala team at any moment. As the minutes pass, however, this sensation fades.

Upon returning from the changing rooms the guests enter the field creating more than one opportunity which sends some shivers down Gollini’s spine with the various Coppola, Lazovic and a Van Persie-trained Dawidowicz against Spain who is unable to find the diving deflection. After the Veronese high notes, the match seems to return to the tracks of the end of the first half, in which it was essentially blocked. Some ghosts begin to hover on the Maradona pitch due to Napoli’s less than stellar home performance this season and the Coppola’s network, who collects the ball from Suslov’s free kick.

As anticipated, the substitutes chosen by Mazzarri are leading the Italian comeback. The first goal was favored by Lindstrom who, after sitting Duda in the penalty area, serves with the counter Fatiguewhich ends up causing Dawidowicz’s own goal, while the winning goal comes from a high recovery of Mazzocchi serving Kvaratskhelia on the edge of the penalty area. The Georgian just needs a handkerchief to turn around after controlling the ball and fire a right-footed shot which mercilessly pierces the opposing goalkeeper and blows up the stadium.

Baroni’s Verona is unable to find consistent results and stumbles after the draw with Frosinone, slowing down their run to seventeenth position and remaining anchored at 18 points. Napoli, on the other hand, with these three vital points to say the least, is trying to get ahead of the Champions League and gain confidence while waiting for their striker, currently on a mission on behalf of his Nigeria. The important thing for Mazzarri today was not to leave any more points on the way, with the fight for fourth place promising to be heated.
