More than 110 tons of Mexican avocado will be exported for the 2024 Super Bowl – El Sol de México

The demand for Mexican avocado for the 2024 Super Bowl could leave an economic impact of 259 million dollars, six percent more than a year ago, estimated the Agricultural Market Consulting Group (GCMA).

According to the organization, to cover the demand around the game, exports are expected to be almost 110 thousand metric tons, an increase of 2.8 percent in volume compared to what was consumed in 2023.

“With Mexico consolidated as the main producer of avocados, it is anticipated that it will continue to be the main supplier to the United States to meet the growing demand associated with the brilliance of the Super Bowl, scheduled for next February 11,” highlighted the GCMA through a report.

Until the end of last year, the export price of avocado rose 32 percent annually, going from 1.76 dollars to 2.33 dollars per kilogram. However, this cost is still below the average of the last five years, despite the consistent supply in the market.

For the Super Bowl, avocado becomes one of the most sought-after snack items, since it is usually prepared in sauces, such as guacamole or pico de gallo, accompanied by toast, tacos, wings or other dishes.

Its demand and eventual export begins up to two months in advance. To be marketed with the neighboring country to the north, Mexican producers must be certified by health authorities such as the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), in order to guarantee that it is a production free of pests and in good condition.

Since February 2022, this fruit, also known as “green gold”, was one of the main products affected by the increase in fertilizer prices that was unleashed by the war between Russia and Ukraine almost two years ago.
