Gasol played for the Grizzlies from 2008 to 2019 and remains the franchise’s all-time leader in playing time (25,917 minutes), starts (762), field goals (4,341), free throws made ( 2701), defensive rebounds (4624), total rebounds (5952) and blocks (1135). He is also third in turnovers (708).

He was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Defensive Player in 2012-13, becoming the first European player to earn the honor. The Spanish-born center was selected to the NBA’s first all-star team in 2014-15, becoming the first player in franchise history to accomplish this feat. Gasol played in three NBA All-Star Games, and was a member of the NBA Second All-Star Team in 2012-13.

Gasol last played in the NBA during the 2020-21 season, and he confirmed his retirement earlier this week. He spent most of his career with the Grizzlies, but also played for the Toronto Raptors and Los Angeles Lakers.

Gasol will become the second player in Tennessee franchise history to have his number retired, after Zach Randolph’s No. 50 was retired on December 11, 2021.
