Mathieu Betts Signs Contract with Detroit Lions After Record-Breaking Season in CFL

Mathieu Betts, reigning defensive player of the year in the Canadian Football League, will sign a contract with the Detroit Lions in the NFL, reports TSN journalist Farhan Lalji.

The 28-year-old Quebec defensive end became the new Canadian record holder for successful quarterback sacks in a campaign with 18 in 18 regular season games with the British Columbia Lions. He surpassed previous record holders Jamaal Westerman (2015) and former Lion Brent Johnson, who set the record in 2005 with 17 after setting the new Canadian record with 16 just a year earlier.

Lalji reported on February 6 that Betts was considering offers from the Lions, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Alouettes.

The former Laval University Rouge & Or player also made 42 defensive tackles and forced four fumbles, a career high, which earned him a spot on the CFL all-star team.
