Manuel Suárez: Leading Chilean Basketball to New Heights

Manuel Suárez (30) is one of the leaders of the Chilean basketball team. He was scandalously the figure in Chile’s 79-77 victory against Argentina, where he contributed 29 points for a victory that had not occurred since 1955. “It is a good message saying that basketball and Chile’s players are improving. I can’t say it now but in two or three more years we can be one of the best in South America,” he said in conversation with As.

“It is time to think that Chile is not just football; “We can be a power in South America in two to three years”

The 2.08 meter tall center plays for BC Kalev of the Estonian basketball league, a club in which he recently became champion of the Kaamos Cup 2024. “Manny” spoke about basketball and his life in the Baltic country, and his challenges for this year with both his club and his national team.

– What is basketball like in Slovenia?

Basketball very well. My teacher there is also the one from the Estonian team. I like the training, it’s a different level. All Estonian players play at high levels in other countries. Being there playing against them together with my teacher is helping me a lot. cold.

– And life, culture?

– The living situation, the country is very beautiful. I love where I am living. The only bad thing is that it is very cold. When it is winter, we have four or five hours of sun, the rest is at night. Except for that, I really love it there. It’s clean, everyone respects it, it’s a good city.

– There are other Chilean players in foreign leagues. How do you think that contributes to Chilean basketball?

– It matters a lot because when you play in another country you look at the game differently. For example, Seba plays in France and is playing the best basketball in the world. When I am playing with him, all the information he observes on his team is passed on to me as well, and that improves my game. A screen, angle or transition, what is the best position to have a rebound, we can talk about all of that and improve how we watch the game.

– Do you think this is the best generation of Chilean basketball?

– Not yet. It’s a good time, but I think that in the future it will be much better.

– What are your goals for this year?

– Win everything with my club, that is always my goal when I am with a club. Win the league and everything we do. And with the national team, fight, fight and fight until finally all of South America says that Chilean basketball is ready, and not a team that when faced loses by 30 points.
