Manchester City Dominates Luton Town in FA Cup Round of 16

Manchester City continues to make a strong impression in the FA Cup. After sweeping Huddersfield at home and eliminating Tottenham in London in this 2023-2024 edition, the title holders won very impressively on the pitch of Luton Town in the round of 16 of the competition (6-2). Raised in confidence thanks to a hat-trick from Erling Haaland during the first period, Pep Guardiola’s men went on to an eighteenth match without defeat in all competitions. And Haaland finally offered himself a quintuple, with four assists from Kévin De Bruyne.

Luton aimed to topple the defending champions at home, but the Hatters ultimately exploded against a team far too strong in this on-paper lopsided tug-of-war. This Tuesday evening at Kenilworth Road, the Skyblues gave their opponents no chance of winning this fifth round of the FA Cup. In fact, this collective supremacy resulted in a magnificent action initiated from the Mancunian defense and punctuated by the inevitable Haaland on the first shot of the match (3rd, 0-1). Decisive passer on the first goal, Kevin De Bruyne did it again by sending the Norwegian machine deep to dominate Teden Mengi in the duel and score a double against the helpless Tim Krul (18th, 0-2).

“Imagining MU champion in three years is unthinkable”

The incredible Haaland – De Bruyne connection

This fabulous connection between De Bruyne and Haaland did not stop there. Always as precise, the Belgian served his center forward for a third goal with finesse (40th, 0-3). That said, Jordan Clark left the suspense hanging just before the break with a sumptuous curling shot into the top corner (45th, 1-3). Author of his first goal of the season, the attacking midfielder then began to believe in the impossible with a second goal to further reduce the gap (52nd, 2-3). Luton Town felt itself growing wings… before crashing.

In a game that became completely crazy, the De Bruyne-Haaland duo took charge of cooling the atmosphere with a fourth goal from the Scandinavian giant, served for the fourth time in the match by their partner (55th, 2-4). Returning to reality, the locals resigned themselves to the task in front of the all-powerful Haaland, scorer for the fifth time (58th, 2-5). To close this offensive festival, Mateo Kovacic added to the score (72nd, 2-6). Game, set and match Manchester City, more than ever a candidate for its own succession…
