Despite their first win since November, Mainz 05 are still deep in the bottom of the table. The team is under pressure before the difficult away game against Bayer Leverkusen. At least there is a hint of Jürgen Klopp wafting through the city with coach Bo Henriksen.

Christian Heidel compared the debut of the new Mainz coach Bo Henriksen with Jürgen Klopp’s early days at the then second division soccer team. “His style is very special. In terms of the impact on the first day, it was a similar feeling with Bo now as it was 23 years ago when Kloppo took over as head coach here on Rose Monday,” the Mainz sports director told “Sport Bild”.

And: “Back then, as now, not only the players but also the employees would have liked to put on their football boots and run onto the pitch after the first speech.”

The 49-year-old Dane Henriksen is the third head coach at FSV Mainz 05 this season, who is in acute danger of relegation. With the 1-0 win against FC Augsburg, the penultimate Bundesliga table ended its negative streak of eleven games without a win on Saturday and gained new hope of staying in the league.

Mainz wants to annoy leaders Bayer Leverkusen

“We believe in ourselves, and I have experienced bigger surprises in football,” said Henriksen – also with a view to the away game at league leaders Bayer Leverkusen on Friday evening (8.30 p.m./DAZN and in the world live ticker). The Danish coach is looking forward to a “fantastic game” and said: “The players will be ready. I hate it when you just hope and wait – you have to believe in your chance.” In the first half of the season, Mainz had lost 3-0 to Bayer under Henriksen’s predecessor Bo Svensson.

Many fans and experts spoke out in favor of the 56-year-old as DFB coach – including Michael Ballack. “We would love it one day because he has this quality, this character that symbolizes the whole German attitude. We can use a leader like him,” he said on the English podcast “Football’s Greatest”.
