Atlético Nacional is not alone in the midst of the crisis. Many former players hope to be reborn in the green of Antioquia, and that is why they hope that the best decisions will be made now that a new technical director is being sought.
A coach is needed to sustain the 2024 sports project, and to give stability to the club from the sports side, accompanying this process with good results.
And while some foreign coaches ask for very high amounts of money, or hesitate to accept the challenge in Colombian soccer, a former player who is part of the great history of Atlético Nacional appeared to offer himself as a coach.
This is Luis Fernando Herrera, the famous ‘Chonto’, remembered for winning the 1989 Copa Libertadores title and the Colombian League in 1991. From the United States, where he currently resides, the former right back raised his hand to help and ask for his opportunity .
“I passed my resume, it would be an honor to direct my beloved green,” ‘Chonto’ Herrera told the newspaper ‘El Colombiano’.
Herrera was interim coach of Deportivo Pereira in 1997; He then spent 10 years in the United States, working on minor division projects and forming the ‘Chonto Herrera Soccer Academy’ school.
In 2008 he returned to Colombia to be Alexis García’s technical assistant at Equidad, where he lasted until 2012. Between 2013 and 2017, he assisted Leonel Álvarez in clubs such as Deportivo Cali, Independiente Medellín and the Paraguayan Cerro Porteño.
In 2019 he made his way as a coach at Atlético Huila. However, he decided to return to the United States, where he has not joined a club, but continues to train with coaching courses.
“I didn’t raise a single hand, I raised both to be considered, I love green. I think that with work we can get out of this difficult moment that the team is experiencing. God will provide,” Herrera added in the talk with the Antioquia newspaper.
