Luciano Darderi: The First ATP Title of the Promising Tennis Player

Luciano Darderi, a tennis player born in Argentina and naturalized Italian, won the final of the Córdoba Open by defeating Facundo Bagnis in two sets. The promise born in Villa Gesell, who has been competing under European nationality for some time, won 6-1, 6-4 to obtain her first ATP title at the age of 21. The match played in the province of Córdoba lasted 1 hour 24 minutes.

Qualified through Qualy, Darderi got rid of the Italian Alessandro Giannessi and the Argentine Andrea Collarini without leaving sets along the way. Already in the 16th final he beat the Chilean Tomás Barrios Vera two sets to one, in the round of 16 he swept the Austrian Sebastian Ofner (38th in the world) and in the quarterfinals the German Yannick Hanfmann (59th), both in two sets. The big setback was in the semifinals, when he left the second best Albiceleste racket behind: Sebastián Báez (26th), defending champion. Darderi won the first set (6-1), fell in the second (3-6) and tipped the balance in his favor in the third (6-3).

Bagnis, who also had no record of ATP titles under his belt, had beaten his compatriots Santiago Rodríguez Taverna and Thiago Tirante in the early stages. While later he got rid of Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, the Spaniards Roberto Carballés Baena and Jaume Munar, plus Federico Coria in the semis. The consolation will be having climbed 69 places in the ranking: he will appear 138th. The data? The man from Rosario became the oldest Argentine tennis player to play in an ATP final at 33 years and 11 months (he surpassed Guillermo Vilas, who lost in Forest Hills 1986 against Frenchman Yannick Noah at 33 years and 8 months).

Luciano Darderi, the champion of the Córdoba Open 2024

As of this Monday, Darderi will be 76th in the ATP ranking, the best position of his short career (he rose 60 steps). Through his social networks, the man from Gesel celebrated the triumph: “First ATP title in Córdoba Open. I want to thank the organization for the treatment and the tournament. Also to my entire team, my family, my girlfriend, my physical trainer, my friends, my sponsors and everyone who is part of my daily life. I hope it is the first of many. Top 100″.

Despite his Italian naturalization, Darderi was the fourth Argentine to win the Córdoba Open trophy in six editions. The others were Juan Ignacio Lóndero (2019), Juan Manuel Cerúndolo (2021) and Sebastián Báez (2023). In addition, the Chilean Christian Garín was champion in 2020 and the Spanish Albert Ramos in 2022. “Hopefully the tournament will be played again next year,” declared Darderi, facing rumors that he could withdraw in 2025.

AN ARGENTINE DOUBLE, CHAMPION IN DOUBLES

Máximo González and Andrés Molteni revalidated the title in the sixth edition of the Córdoba Open by defeating the French Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul 6-4 and 6-1 in the final, whom they had already beaten in the decisive duel last year. This is the seventh ATP title for the albiceleste couple.
